Tóth T., L. Kuti and U. Fügedi 2003. Monthly studies at Zab-szék saline lake. Temporal changes of lake water, groundwater, soil and vegetation. (Hung.) Természetvédelmi Közlemények. 10:191-206 During three years every month repeated observations were carried out for following thechanges in soil properties in the Puccinellia limosa grassland at Zab-szék saline lake. Parallelly the water level of lake and a nearby well, as well as the chemical properties of the waters were also studied.Due to a rise in the lake level, soil and groundwater sampling was discontinued during 18 months.Puccinellia limosa shoots appeared only half year after the shrinking of lake surface beyondthe studied 4 1x1 m quadrates. Rise of lake water level showed close correlation with the amount ofprecipitation, the drop of lake water level showed close correlation with evaporation, but the groundwaterlevel showed close correlation with the amount of the precipitation during the previous month. The three studied waters showed the dominance of sodium and bicarbonate ions, and in thecollected salt efflorescences sodium and carbonate were dominant. The X-ray diffractometry of thesalt efflorescences showed the presence of halite, trona, thenardite, thermonatrite and gypsum. The salt concentration of groundwater showed close correlation with the meteorological parameters of the given month, buth the salinity of the 0-70 cm soil layer showed close correlation with meteorological parameters of the previous month. The soil moisture content was determined by the monthly temperature, potential evaporation and the level of groundwater.
